Columbus hosts NRECA Regions 1 and 4 meeting

Tom McQuiston, board president of Butler Rural Electric Cooperative and Ohio’s director on the NRECA board, welcomed attendees to the Regions 1 and 4 meeting on September 6.

The Buckeye State hosted cooperative leaders from 13 other states to kick off the 2018 policymaking process at the NRECA Regions 1 and 4 meeting, held September 5-7 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Attendees considered a number of proposed NRECA resolutions and amendments to existing resolutions. Resolutions approved at this regional meeting, as well as resolutions from other regional meetings across the United States, will be considered by voting members at the 2019 NRECA annual meeting in Orlando.

Several Ohio cooperative leaders presented at keynote and breakout sessions throughout the event. Pat O’Loughlin, president and CEO of Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives, participated in a breakout panel on the costs of providing reliable, safe, and affordable energy. Doug Payauys, chief operating officer of fiber at Consolidated Cooperative, served on a panel discussion on broadband internet service. Doug Miller, vice president of statewide services at Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives, highlighted Project Ohio’s successful philanthropic efforts in Guatemala with NRECA International. Patrick Higgins, director of communications at Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives, discussed media management in the event of a cybersecurity breach.

Wednesday evening featured a volunteer opportunity with Operation Gratitude, an organization on a mission to thank every American who serves in the military or as a first responder, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio. Volunteers wrote letters, made paracord “survival” bracelets, and prepared snack packs.
