Carroll Electric Cooperative employees recently celebrated five years without a single employee lost-time incident.
“Even one year without a lost-time accident is a huge accomplishment, and it speaks to the commitment our employees have to working safely every single day,” said Carroll Electric CEO and General Manager Larry Fenbers. “I couldn’t be prouder of our employees.”
Carroll Electric established a committee that puts safety directly into the hands of the employees. Committee members make recommendations on safety equipment purchases, review safety policies and suggest training necessary for employee engagement in safe work practices. Employees also participate in monthly safety trainings that range from pole-top rescue to first aid and CPR.
“Our employees recognize the danger in the work we do. They review near-misses and accidents each month,” Fenbers said.
“Employees discuss the fundamental things that have gone wrong and then make recommendations that are long-term solutions.”
Aside from reducing to zero the number of lost-time accidents and also reducing near-misses, the culture of safety at Carroll Electric has saved the cooperative thousands of dollars in workers’ compensation costs.
